Sunburn? No problem!

Plant compounds to relieve sunburn

Unsurprisingly, sunburn is one of the top holiday complaints, with 46% of those travelling outside the UK and 30% of those remaining in the UK getting sunburnt according to a survey conducted by the British Association of Dermatologists. We are less likely to use suncream when we stay at home and incorrect use of sun cream is also a huge factor – applying less than is recommended and less frequently or using expired products often means that we are poorly protected from this painful condition. However a group of plant compounds, called anthocyanidins, found in blueberries, red grapes and blackberries may be useful for reducing the painful symptoms of sunburn. Antioxidants such as these and Vitamin C can help to neutralise some of the free radicals generated by UV light and also protect collagen in the skin, which reduces sun ageing. Link to Article
