Natural supplements for low mood

25th Jul 2023

Depression and low mood are conditions which affect a huge number of people and a study in 2021 found that 68% of those treated with antidepressants fail to respond to the first medication used and a further 15-30% don't respond to two or more different medications. With this and the addition of unpleasant side effects in mind as well, many people are choosing to turn to supplements to support or replace medications. Whilst depression is a condition which should be medically treated, if possible, low mood and seasonal disorders can respond well to some supplements. Vitamin D seems to be particularly relevant as receptors for this nutrient are found in areas of the brain connected to low mood, and it can also support serotonin production. Supporting a diverse microbiome, with probiotics and prebiotics, can also have a significant effect on mental health, as can ensuring good iron status. Link to Article
