There is also a link between gut health and inflammation, with experts demonstrating that those diagnosed with arthritis also have an altered microbiome. Diets rich in plant based foods, such as the Mediterranean diet, are closely associated with a reduction in pain and inflammation. Consuming 30 different plant based foods a week can also improve microbiome diversity, which in turn reduces inflammatory markers. This is partially due to the fibre and polyphenols contained in plant foods but also because some fruits and vegetables also provide prebiotics including FOS which encourage the proliferation of good bacteria.
