Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common condition that affects the joints and is characterised by stiffness, discomfort and a lack of mobility. Almost 9 million people in the UK over the age of 45 have sought treatment for this painful condition, according to statistics from Arthritis UK, and cases are steadily increasing. Even before the joints deteriorate to the point where OA is diagnosed, stiffness and discomfort can really affect quality of life. |
One
of the best supplements for joint health glucosamine, an amino sugar
found in cartilage. It is a constituent of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs),
hyaluronic acid and keratin sulphate which are found in cartilage,
synovial fluid and intervertebral discs. Taking glucosamine improved
joint symptoms and reduced changes in joint space compared to placebo.
Reducing
inflammation is also important for reducing joint discomfort and the
omega 3s, EPA and DHA, are important as consumption of oily fish is low
in the UK and omega 3 intakes are particularly poor. Fish oil increases
production of anti-inflammatory prostaglandins and can reduce symptoms
such as pain and knee function, as well as improving walking speed and
reducing the need for painkillers and NSAID medications. Turmeric is
also very closely involved in reducing the production of inflammatory
compounds including TNF-α, CRP, COX-2 and interleukins. In trials of
those with arthritis, turmeric reduced pain and improved joint function
and was comparable in effect to NSAIDS. Link to Article
