"B12 deficiency is an issue which is likely to continue to rise in the UK, with more people embracing vegetarian and vegan diets and an ageing population. B12 is a nutrient which is well established as being of concern for both vegans and vegetarians, as it is not found naturally in plant-based foods. Studies have shown that up to 86.5% of vegetarians are deficient in B12 and vegans are at an even higher risk, due to the avoidance of milk and eggs. A decrease in stomach acid production, required for B12 to be released from food and for the production of intrinsic factor which aids its absorption, can become more common as we age. The use of medications to reduce stomach acid can also affect B12 absorption. Symptoms of B12 deficiency can include low energy and mood and tingling and numbness in the feet and hands and some of these symptoms can become permanent if left untreated. A simple supplement can, in most cases, ensure an adequate intake and reduced these problems." Lamberts Link to Article
