Chromium to beat stress cravings
|
Chronic
stress can often have us reaching for all the wrong foods, and sugary,
fatty treats such as chocolate can be one of the main comfort foods we
choose. On a basic level, the release of cortisol, one of the hormones
related to stress, initiates the ‘fight or flight’ response. This
response requires a burst of energy and triggers cravings for foods to
provide the fuel needed to escape the source of the stress. But choosing
sugary foods can cause insulin output to spike in response to allow
glucose to enter the cells. This can then lead to low blood sugar which
can then generate further cortisol production and more cravings, causing
a vicious cycle of poor food choices and feeling of lethargy and more
stressed.
However, chromium might be the key to break this cycle as
studies show that it stimulates glucose oxidation, a key step in the
conversion of glucose to ATP and enhances insulin sensitivity, ensuring
that glucose enters cells effectively and provides the energy needed
without triggering additional cravings. Link to Article
