Do probiotics help with bloating?

Probiotics are purported to enhance gut health, with promising results that they may ease gastrointestinal issues. So, do probiotics help with bloating? Whilst it is difficult to draw firm conclusions from the current research, a 2020 review demonstrated that probiotics could help to alleviate symptoms of bloating in people with IBS. Of course, the effectiveness is dependent on the cause of your symptoms and the type of probiotic, with one prenatal dietician stating that 'if your bloating is because of intestinal dysbiosis, then probiotics like Bifidobacterium can be beneficial'. In the case of bloating, the varieties with the most research evidence are Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. It is important to note that clients should be prepared for a transitional period of a few weeks while the body adjusts to probiotic intake, with research suggesting that bloating is a common symptom during this phase, so the problem may get worse before it gets better.
