Daily multivitamins may improve brain function in older people – US study
Whilst all individuals’ nutritional needs are different, it is recognised that certain groups of people share common micronutrient requirements. Interestingly, a recent US study has found that a daily multivitamin and mineral supplement may reduce cognitive decline in older people by approximately 60%, or nearly two years. Interestingly, supplementation appeared to improve cognitive scores, particularly for those with cardiovascular disease, a known risk factor for dementia. Drawing upon this, the study’s authors wrote that a daily multivitamin and mineral supplement could offer “either greater relative improvement or more protection from cardiovascular disease-related cognitive decline”.
Whilst the initial findings certainly show promise, it is important to note that independent confirmatory studies are needed in larger, more diverse study populations to ensure that future treatments and preventions are effective in all populations. None-the-less, an interesting read this week. Link to Article
